While the flooding in Peru has stopped, relief efforts in the region are far from finished. The CHOICE Peru team has been working with local partners to help drive, fund, and implement relief and reconstruction efforts. The CHOICE Peru team reports that the damage in the Piura is severe, with more than 800,000 people displaced and 100,000 homes destroyed. The relief efforts on the ground are struggling to provide basic relief supplies to the displaced, which are living in massive tent cities while homes are rebuilt. In these cities there is never enough shelter or food; many tents host 3 or more families, and most of the displaced people are only receiving one meal a day.

Public health remains a critical concern in Piura. Lack of adequate sanitation options, combined with the stagnant water is providing fertile breeding grounds for disease. Over 800 cases of dengue fever (a virus spread by mosquitoes in tropical areas) have been reported so far - dengue fever and other diseases are spreading quickly through the displaced community. CHOICE has provided over 500 mosquito nets in the past month to fight the spread of dengue fever and other mosquito-borne illnesses, but until sanitation in the tent cities improves these numbers will continue to rise.

Despite the loss of practically everything they owned, the people of Piura continue to show resilience and compassion for their neighbors and community.  As the CHOICE team drove around the area assessing damages and distributing aid, they found a dusty, hot disaster zone rife with stenches of rot, mud, mosquitoes and stagnating water. They also noticed many private vehicles and corporate logoed trucks passing out bottled water, food, blankets, and other critical supplies.

Flor Jimenez, a Lima resident, with family living Piura had heard of the extreme damage to the neighboring Piura region. Taking the initiative, Flor worked with her company and community to raise over 10,000 soles ($3,500 USD) for CHOICE to use in relief and rebuilding efforts. Much of the support in Piura is being driven by Peruvians - men and women like Flor that want to see their country rebuilt. CHOICE Peru is diligently working as a conduit for these efforts - providing a backbone to collect, sort, and distribute supplies in partnership with the Peruvian government and local leaders.

Donating through CHOICE ensures that your money goes directly to our Peru team, who are securing supplies for those affected the most.  Donate now.
