Those in extreme poverty rarely have access to traditional financial institutions, especially among the women in these communities. Due to lack of financial assets, credit history, or demonstrable income, those in extreme poverty are frequently unable to utilize traditional loans for development of their community. However, these financial services are critical for starting small businesses and income-generating enterprises.
Community level economic empowerment is a gradual process, with each step building on the momentum of previous projects. Financial assets and literacy in the community must be developed organically over time. The CHOICE system is designed to provide a method for individuals and communities to build the practice of saving and joint investing within their communities, creating the resources to combat systemic poverty within the community itself.
