2008 Expedition Calendar
FAQs

CHOICE's humanitarian expeditions allow participants to dive deeper into the culture and customs of a country than any tourist vacation would ever allow, but our expeditions are not tourist vacations.

Participants should be prepared to face frustrating and disquieting circumstances while traveling, working and living in impoverished, primitive areas. Participants should review each project area's expedition style before deciding which expedition is right for them.

BOLIVIA

Standing side-by-side with rural villagers, if the scenery doesn’t take your breath away – the altitude will. Working in the Altiplano of Bolivia, at 13,000 feet and still dwarfed by the Andes mountains, you are able to make a difference in the world. The people possess a quiet respect and love for celebration – evident in their village greeting of the expedition. When village leaders were asked, they identified water as being their primary concern. Thus, expeditions in 2005 will be helping construct community water systems. While in the region, there is an optional extension to visit Macchu Picchu to see the historic ruins.

GUATEMALA

CHOICE Expeditions reach into even the most remote parts of the world, areas that others have forgotten – as in the case of Guatemala. We work in the Cloud Forest District in the state of Alta Verapaz with the indigenous Kekchi people, located 10 hours from the nearest major city. A shy and reserved people – the Keckchi exude gratitude and humility. The combination of amazing scenery, kindness of the people and project work make for a transforming and unforgettable experience - one that can only be experienced to be appreciated.

MEXICO

Expeditioners experience the stark reality of rural poverty, and yet an adaptable lifestyle full of joy and appreciation for family. While the people of Mexico may not have much, they are happy and share their unique outlook on life with participants. Water is of the highest priority to rural villages – the rainy season lasts a short 3 months of the year. Simple construction of water cisterns allows a family to have clean, safe water throughout the year. Participants are also able to help build life saving adobe stoves, teach basic hygiene and health as well as other small projects. The expedition concludes in the capital Guanajuato, a Spanish colonial town, to appreciate the culture, amazing architecture and fascinating history.

KENYA

Prepare yourself – because once you visit Kenya, you will want to return yearly. The warmth of the people, their ambition to improve life, sense of community and the dramatic culture make for a life changing experience. Each expedition is greeted by the entire village singing. Projects are typically a combination of schoolhouse construction, pit latrines and school desk construction. Upon completion of the expedition, the village throws a celebration – complete with singing and dancing. Participants are also able to spend a few days on the beaches of the Indian Ocean, tour Mombassa and may choose to extend and do a safari.

NEPAL

While the Himalayan skyline might be enough to draw you in, the warmth, hospitality, and spirit of the Nepalese people will keep you coming back. Picture This… Nepal, the roof of the world, calls to you with a haunting beauty that is compelling. Expeditioners will work side by side with villagers in building bio gas digesters. This simple technology allows families to generate energy from bio-waste, which in turn saves time spent gathering wood, prevents deforestation, prevents upper-respiratory disease from smoke inhalation, and protects valuable water resources from human waste contamination.
