Medical
Through local residents and community leaders CHOICE Humanitarian identifies healthcare needs in rural villages. CHOICE assists in the construction of medical clinics and in training personnel. CHOICE welcomes trained medical volunteers to participate in CHOICE expeditions. They can be of great service in teaching local health workers in preventative techniques, simple first aid, women's health and prenatal care, and other basic healthcare practices. CHOICE emphasizes the goal of "helping people help themselves". Individuals learn to develop the tools needed to improve their own health as well as the health care systems of their communities.
Experienced medical personnel such as doctors, nurses, EMT’s and others are welcomed on all CHOICE Humanitarian expeditions not only for service to villagers, but to provide routine medical care for fellow expeditioners. The comfort of knowing that qualified medical advice and care is nearby when volunteers are in remote, rural locations, helps reduce stress and increase productivity on expeditions.
Dental
The dental clinics set up on CHOICE expeditions are referred to as "Bush Dentistry". "Bush Dentistry" involves extracting teeth and on occasion filling cavities. Dentistry in the field helps relieve the constant tooth pain that many of the villagers experience. The rewards of the service are immediate as villagers’ gratitude is offered in abundance.
Portable dental equipment containing drills, suction and water hoses have made procedures such as filling teeth possible. A manual is provided by CHOICE that offers more specific information on the equipment needed for these Bush Dental kits. Many other dentists who have participated in CHOICE expeditions are available to give tips and share information about working in the field.
